Carlson Duluth Co. boasts a proud history dating back over a century, built on a foundation of dedication, craftsmanship, and a commitment to serving the Duluth, Minnesota community. Our story begins with A.P. Green, an enterprising Swedish immigrant whose journey to America ultimately led to the establishment of one of Duluth’s most enduring plumbing and heating businesses.
A.P. Green, whose name became Carlson upon arrival, leveraged his handyman skills and entrepreneurial spirit. After successfully operating a general store and the West Duluth Post Office, he discovered the burgeoning plumbing industry in Winnipeg. This inspired him to send his eldest son, Walter, to learn the trade.
In 1905, Walter and his brothers, Cliff, August, Art, Glen, and Albert, officially founded Carlson Bros. Plumbing and Heating of West Duluth. The early 1900s brought a construction boom, and our company quickly grew, establishing a reputation for reliable plumbing services and heating system installations.
Adapting Through Generations: From World War to Modern HVAC
Through periods of war and economic hardship, the Carlson family adapted. The Great Depression led to the formation of smaller, independent companies, including Carlson Duluth Co. under Cliff’s leadership. This firm grew to be one of the largest in the area, handling major projects like federal hydro-electric dams and military installations.
The 1950s and 60s introduced the next generation. In 1963, Elmer (Curly) Carlson expanded into plumbing and heating construction with A.W. Kuettel Co. Upon his retirement in 1980, his sons re-established Carlson Bros. Plumbing and Heating.
